The IES <Virtual Environment> is a suite of building performance modelling tools based around a single integrated data model. The purpose of the system is to provide the high quality information required to design, build and operate better performing, more sustainable communities. It can be applied from the earliest stages of the design or through operational stages. The <Virtual Environment> is used today by many of the world’s leading architectural and engineering practices and in recent years has been proliferating at a very rapid rate due to the unique ability to improve decision making and workflow.
The Institute of Computer Science and Social Studies (ALU-FR) at the University of Freiburg links computer science to economic sciences and has a strong background in the area of smart grid business models, energy informatics as well as the impact of data privacy on business models. ALU-FR is well connected to the energy informatics community, the security community and the EU-funded energy projects as well as the national program ‘‘E-energy – smart grids made in Germany”. The ALU-FR has contributed to the German regulation on E-Commerce and Digital Signatures by its concept of security protection goals. The concept of multi-lateral security and the protection goals have become an ISO standard. In energy informatics, especially for decentralized microgrid-micromarket concept, Freiburg is instrumental in the design of an energy institute and curriculum of energy management for a consortium of German energy companies.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE is a member of the Fraunhofer Society for Applied Research. Fraunhofer Society, one of Europe’s leading research organisations, conducts contract research for the private sector as well as for the service and the public sector in an international context. With a staff of approximately 1100, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE (Fraunhofer) is the largest solar energy research institute in Europe. The work at the Institute ranges from the investigation of scientific and technological fundamentals for solar energy applications, through the development of production technology and prototypes, to the construction of demonstration systems. Generation of new knowledge is all over the world closely interwoven with economic, cultural, social and political frameworks. The department »Smart Grids« is an interdisciplinary group of technical, social and economic experts which is involved in numerous research projects i.e. in the topics innovative energy supply systems, „smart grid“ and „smart metering“-technologies, multi-utility energy supply as well as electromobility. In the Department the Team “User Behaviour and field trials” provide competences from behavioural sciences for development and implementation of innovative energy supply concepts and energy efficiency. As well as the analysis of user behaviour, design of the relationship between utility and customer and social influence factors on energy consumption, social-empirical research in the area of Smart Metering, intelligent control systems in households (Smart Home) and innovative tariff systems.
Energy Agency of Plovdiv (EAP) is an expert organization promoting efficient and sustainable use of energy and renewable energy in order to achieve energy independence and competitive prices in the Plovdiv area. EAP’s expertise covers consultancy for improving local energy systems (for local authorities, private companies and citizens), policy advice, project management, as well as energy performance contracting implementation. It carries out feasibility studies, energy analyses, energy projects identification, development and management. EAP is the first energy management agency established in Bulgaria under the SAVE II program of the European Commission (EC) in 2000. EAP is a member of Federation of European Regional Energy and Environment Agencies (FEDARENE), and is a founder of the Association of Energy Agencies in Bulgaria (ABEA). EAP has developed and managed more than 35 RES and EE energy projects together with national and international partners.

"EVN Bulgaria Toplofikatsia" EAD" supplies heat to over 35 000 clients in Plovdiv and Asenovgrad.
In 2011, a new co-generation plant was built, producing jointly electricity and heat. The facility has electric power of 49,9 MW and heat power of 54 MW. Cogeneration of electricity and heat has proven benefits. In combination with current best available techniques it is the most effective and environmentally friendly method. The environmental performance of the new power plant was confirmed by the positive evaluation of the project's environmental impact. With this investment, "EVN Bulgaria Toplofikatsia" EAD contributed to the improvement of the economic infrastructure of Bulgaria, making Plovdiv the centre of modern energy production. The implementation of the Cogeneration Project Plovdiv will contribute to the greater security of heat supply to citizens because of the new best available and effective techniques.
With a population of approximately 144,000, The City of Rijeka is the second largest city in Croatia. It is the most important Croatian harbour and is an industrial, administrative, cultural and university centre of the Region. Over the last decade, the city has merged activities and applies a more responsible administration approach to urban development projects, particularly with regard to the plans for switching over to renewable energy sources in public transportation, energy efficiency growth in the field of construction works as well as in information management and as regards the indicators of energy efficiency measures after the provision of new ICT infrastructure. The city has realized a number of actions in accordance with the Future Internet 2020 vision and the present Energy Efficiency Directive, signing the Green Digital Charter and the Covenant of Mayors. Additionally, Rijeka is benefiting from the introduction of Croatian Codex in consultation processes with the public and EU Smart Regulation, and adjusting accordingly in order to achieve open access to the administration and ensure the rights of the citizens to participate in decision making processes.
Energo Ltd., Rijeka, Croatia, is a utility company that deals with gas distribution, distribution of heating energy and public lighting as core businesses. The company also develops a wide range of other utility and engineering activities and the Automation/IT department offers the services of data acquisition, remote control and GIS on the Croatian market. Since thirty-four percent of the company is owned by Italian utility company Amga. Know-how coming from Italy combined with domestic knowledge and experience has resulted in Energo’s leading position among similar Croatian companies. Smart metering and similar technologies are in company’s scope for several years.
Energo Ltd. has future plans to provide new services to his clients, such as: selling electricity, providing smart-metering services, and so on. One of the goals is to continue helping the city of Rijeka to reach its CO2 reduction goal defined in its SEAP.
