Rijeka’s implementation of iURBAN awarded best GDC smart city project on ‘Promoting open & interoperable solutions’

Location: Brussels

Date: 27 January 2017

Rijeka (Croatia) has been revealed as the winner of the Green Digital Charter (GDC) 2016 Award on ‘Promoting open & interoperable solutions’. The awards ceremony took place during the conference ‘Cities in Transition – the role of digital in shaping our future cities’ jointly organised by the EUROCITIES Knowledge Society Forum (KSF) and GDC. In total, 21 projects from 14 different cities were submitted for the second edition of the GDC awards. They can all be found in our 2016 collection of case studies, available here (http://bit.ly/2kaqUYG).

Miimu Airaksinen, research professor (VTT), presented the award and congratulated Rijeka for implementation of the iURBAN - Intelligent Urban Energy Tool, which addresses market demand for cheaper and cleaner energy services with the direct involvement of local residents, energy companies and public administrations. Tatjana Perse from the City of Rijeka received the award. Runner-up cities for this category were Amsterdam (Open Data – Smart Neighbourhoods) and Valencia (Valencia Smart City Platform).

The Green Digital Charter (GDC) Awards recognise outstanding achievements by GDC signatory cities in their use of ICT solutions to become smarter and greener. The charter is a declaration committing cities to work together in delivering on the EU climate objectives through the use of ICT. The GuiDanCe project, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, supports, monitors and promotes the signatories’ progress towards a green and inclusive digital agenda.
