Rijeka’s implementation of iURBAN awarded best GDC smart city project on ‘Promoting open & interoperable solutions’

Rijeka (Croatia) has been revealed as the winner of the Green Digital Charter (GDC) 2016 Award on ‘Promoting open & interoperable solutions’. The awards ceremony took place during the conference ‘Cities in Transition – the role of digital in shaping our future cities’ jointly organised by the EUROCITIES Knowledge Society Forum (KSF) and GDC. In total, 21 projects from 14 different cities were submitted for the second edition of the GDC awards. They can all be found in our 2016 collection of case studies, available here (

Miimu Airaksinen, research professor (VTT), presented the award and congratulated Rijeka for implementation of the iURBAN - Intelligent Urban Energy Tool, which addresses market demand for cheaper and cleaner energy services with the direct involvement of local residents, energy companies and public administrations. Tatjana Perse from the City of Rijeka received the award. Runner-up cities for this category were Amsterdam (Open Data – Smart Neighbourhoods) and Valencia (Valencia Smart City Platform).


The Green Digital Charter (GDC) Awards recognise outstanding achievements by GDC signatory cities in their use of ICT solutions to become smarter and greener. The charter is a declaration committing cities to work together in delivering on the EU climate objectives through the use of ICT. The GuiDanCe project, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, supports, monitors and promotes the signatories’ progress towards a green and inclusive digital agenda.

iURBAN Open Access book

We are delighted that the iURBAN Open Access book is published online, both the PDF version as well as the version for online reading.

With the intent to create an impact that will last beyond the end of the project the consortium decided to publish a book. A book entitled “iURBAN: Intelligent Urban Energy tool” has been developed just after the end of the project with the River Publishers[1].
Consortium iURBAN members as well as external experts were invited to make a contribution to this book by writing a chapter. An editor note written by the editorial team Narcis Avellana, Alberto Fernandez and Sofia Aivalioti acknowledged the iURBAN project and the European Commission funding.

River Publishers is an international publisher that publishes research monographs, professional books, handbooks, edited volumes and journals with focus on key research areas within the fields of Science, Technology and Medicine (STM). River Publishers books are indexed in Web of Science Book Citation Index (BkCI).

Three years of iURBAN. Three years has passed since we started that September of 2013 in the kick-off meeting held in Plovdiv. The commitment and motivation of municipalities and utilities from Rijeka and Plovdiv was a good omen of the project; they have put big efforts to make real a transition from the old energy business to a more efficient, clean and citizen-oriented business model....

Final iURBAN Consortium meeting


Location: Barcelona, Spain
Date: 14 – 16 September 2016 

The iURBAN consortium gathered together from 14th to 16th of September for the final iURBAN project meeting at the AXEL Hotel, Barcelona, Spain. 

The main aims were to review the state of development of the activities and progress related to the iURBAN platform and to define in detail the remaining tasks to ensure the project success. The meeting concentrated on future exploitation of results as well as on the overall evaluation of the obtained results. A specific section was dedicated to the discussion of the deliverable Final Report. 

All the partners of the consortium attended the meeting: Sensing and Control, EVN TP, EAP, Vitrociset, IES, Fraunnhofer ISE, City of Rijeka, Energo, and ALU Freiburg.

It was a bit sad that is the end of the project and  that we see each other for the last time. It was great working on the project and we hope to meet again.
