Final iURBAN Workshops in Rijeka and Plovdiv in April 2016

Description of
workshop:

Mid April, iURBAN partners invited Plovdiv and Rijeka citizens and organisations to report their stories of what iURBAN means to them. For a period of 6 months, residential users were being equipped with a software tool to monitor energy consumption (Rijeka and Plovdiv) and to participate in demand response programmes for peak load shaving (Rijeka). Public users and companies were equipped with software solutions to monitor production and consumption and to review energy management for various buildings.
In an open discussions, users reported their experience and suggestions for further improvement. Here are some examples of what users had to say:
The municipality of Rijeka: The project allows the momentary defining of consumption and faster detection of problems, and thus faster accession to the elimination of the same.
Tracking consumption itself allows correction of our behavior as the end user in order to reduce energy consumption.
Sports facility: I use the system. It is transparent and all the feedback data are provided. It also provides successful control of the consumption of energy, so I can react promptly in case of any significant deviation from the normal, everyday consumption.
Residential user: I was pleased with the level of temperature control from a remote place and and I regularly used that possibility. The control system was working as expected.
During the test period there were a lot of technical flaws to application that were promptly dealed with due to the excellent response of the “support”.
Residential User: I have not been using the software, because of problem using the computer

 
Objectives of the workshop:
  • To make participants more familiar with the topic heating with gas and energy efficiency as well as introducing the iURBAN project to them
  • To exchange of gas using practices of people in their own homes
  • To gain a better understanding of their thoughts on possibilities to enhance energy efficiency with behavioural change and information and communication technology
  • To start discussing and outlining the motivating aspects that could trigger active changes in behaviour
  • Discussing which information and communication channels could support increasing their energy efficient behaviours in their every-day lives

WP5 - lead use workshop with citizens of Plovdiv

Description of
workshop:
The concept for the Lead Users Workshops in the city of Plovdiv focused on three major groups of users: Lead Users (private), Early Majority (private), and Public Users and Prosumers (public). They were jointly organized by Franhofer, EVN and EAP representatives, and were carried out on April 23-24, 2014.

The first Lead User Workshop was visited by 8 lead users, i.e. people who are knowledgeable and experienced in the field of heating and modern technologies. They listened to an iUrban introduction presentation, and shared their energy profile through a group exercise. The input information facilitated a discussion over the advantages of having iURBAN software for monitoring one’s home energy as well as the possible improvements of the energy services provided by the local energy supplier. The lead users would suggest a number of functionalities towards the use cases and would argue of their potential to be developed further and presented to the wide public.

During the second day workshop, eight Early Starters were invited, i.e. people who are not involved much in heating issues and are not ICT-oriented. They were again shown to the iURBAN introduction presentation and had to present through a group exercise their energy profile. Their discussion focused much more on the advantages and disadvantages of the energy service provided, and took iUrban as an example of hardware and software technology that would eventually undo all the faults of the current energy system. The early majority would suggest improvement in the iURBAN use cases and some new functionalities.

The third stage of the iURBAN lead user workshops in the city of Plovdiv was presented through a series of interviews (23-28.04.2014) with public energy users and prosumers – 1 mayoralty, 2 prosumer kindergartens, and 2 PV prosumers. The interviews were carried out by representatives of EVN and EAP, and focused on the introduction of iURBAN and user expectations related to it. A significant step ahead during the interviews was a structure discussion over use cases and functionalities that the users would like to have in the iURBAN software. There outputs are valuable to the project as they shape the iURBAN software to the demands and necessities of the users.

workshop:
A third lead user workshop was carried out in Rijeka at the beginning of April 2014. Residents from multi- apartment blocks and multi-story houses came together to discuss about their current gas usage practices in regards to heating their homes. The main part of the discussion was dealing with how residents of Rijeka can show more energy efficient behaviour for heating and which technological applications can support them.

  • To make participants more familiar with the topic heating with gas and energy efficiency as well as introducing the iURBAN project to them
  • To exchange of gas using practices of people in their own homes
  • To gain a better understanding of their thoughts on possibilities to enhance energy efficiency with behavioural change and information and communication technology

  • They provided their own suggestions and ideas about technological solutions which would help change their behaviour (for example to use different prices that encourage people to use gas at certain times more than at other times).

Description of
workshop:
Two separate lead user workshops were undertaken with citizens of Rijeka, one including employees of public institutions and the other with residents living in multi-apartment blocks. The aims of the workshops were to involve and empower the citizens of Rijeka in the iURBAN project and to pursue an exchange of these experts’ opinions and knowledge about heating practices and energy efficient behaviour together with the energy provider (ENERGO), the municipality (Grad Rijeka) and a research institution (Fraunhofer ISE). This approach will help to enhance the local appropriateness of the project and to implement pilots that are shaped by its users.
 
Objectives of the
workshops:
  • To give participants an impression of the importance and the complexity of the iURBAN project by introducing the most relevant facts
  • To get an idea of the participants’ current heating practices at their homes or at the public institutions they work
  • To gain a better understanding of the challenges the participants currently face in terms of heating and their thoughts on possibilities to enhance energy efficiency with behavioural change and ICT technology
  • To discuss about and ultimately define certain motivating factors as well as the circumstances under which the participants would be willing  to actively change their behaviour

  • Share input presentations from projects about topics such as use cases (project descriptions) and business models carried out nationally and internationally as intelligent energy solutions by ALU-FR, EAP, UNDP and FhG-ISE
  • Gain a deeper understanding of current market conditions, challenges and EVN’s as well as Energo’s project intentions in the frame of iURBAN.
  • To collectively discuss and eventually determine use cases and business models for iURBAN.
  • Another important topic was the initial discussion about possible business models to be implemented for the iURBAN project (along with WP2).
